Brittle-ductile transition and associated seismicity: Experimental and numerical studies and relationship with the b-value

چکیده
The acoustic emission (AE) and the mechanical behavior of granite samples during triaxial compression tests have been analyzed. The size of AE events displays power-law distributions, conforming to the Gutenberg-Richter law observed for earthquakes which is characterized by the b-value. As the con ning pressure increases, the macroscopic behavior becomes more ductile. For all di erent stages of the rock mechanical behavior (linear, non-linear pre-peak, non linear post-peak, shearing), there is a systematic decrease of the b-value with increasing con ning pressure. A numerical model based on progressive elastic damage and the nite element method allows simulations of the main experimental observations on AE and of a wide range of macroscopic behaviors from brittleness to ductility. The model reproduces a decrease in the b-value that appears to be related to the type of macroscopic behavior (brittle-ductile) rather than to the con ning pressure. Both experimental and numerical results suggest a relationship between the b-value and the brittle-ductile transition. Moreover these results are consistent with recent earthquake observations and give new insight into the behavior of the Earth's crust.

Meso-scale Modeling of Tension Analysis of Pure and Intra-ply Hybrid Woven Composites Using Finite Element Method
One of the key issues associated with using of composites in various applications is their tensile behavior. The tensile behavior of a composite material is strongly influenced by the properties of its constituents and their distribution. This paper focuses on gaining some insights into the tensile process of pure and hybrid woven composite reinforced with brittle and ductile yarns. For this pu...
متن کاملNumerical Modeling of the Ductile-Brittle Transition
Numerical studies of the ductile-brittle transition are described that are based on incorporating physically based models of the competing fracture mechanisms into the material's constitutive relation. An elastic-viscoplastic constitutive relation for a porous plastic solid is used to model ductile fracture by the nucleation and subsequent growth of voids to coalescence. Cleavage is modeled in ...
متن کاملDynamic and Quasi-Static Tensile Properties of Structural S400 Steel
The study of mechanical behavior of the structural steel S400 under quasi- static and dynamic loading has been the subject of this investigation. In oder to obtain different stress - triaxiality conditions the specimens were notched with 1, 1.5, 2 and 3.5 mm notch radius. The results of fractography show as the velocity of tension increases, ductility reduces and a ductile-brittle transition oc...

This paper study the recent seismicity in Earthquake hazard zones in India. A large historical earthquake event catalog to cover the period of 1900-2018, the parameters date, time, latitude, longitude, depth and magnitude has been used to calculating frequency-magnitude distribution (b-value) of seismic hazard zones in India. To convert different magnitude scales into a single moment magnitude ...

Fieldand petrographic studies of the Paleozoic metamorphic rocks of New York City suggest a new interpretation of the stratigraphy and structure of the region and has delineated a number of ductileand brittle faults. The belt of rocks originally lumped together as the Manhattan Schist is now interpreted to consist of three mappable units structurally imbricated by two major ductile faults, the ...
